Clearwell Castle Wedding Venue: A Gloucestershire Guide
Clearwell Castle wedding venue is one of the most dramatic places I have ever photographed a wedding. This fairytale castle sits in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, surrounded by twenty acres of grounds. It has centuries of history behind it and a guest list that has included Tudor courtiers and rock stars. Here is why Clearwell Castle deserves a place on your venue shortlist.
A Castle With Centuries of Stories to Tell
The first house on this site was built in the mid-15th century by Robert Greyndour. It passed through the Baynham family, then to Sir Nicholas Throckmorton in the early 17th century. It was here that Sir Walter Raleigh famously courted Beth Throckmorton, one of the great romantic scandals of the Elizabethan age. In 1727 the Wyndham family bought the estate. They built much of the mansion you see today, though some parts, including the Ballroom, are older still.
From Fire to Rock and Roll
Clearwell’s story is not all romance and elegance. In 1929 the castle was gutted by fire and a collection of irreplaceable antiques was lost. It fell into ruin and by 1953 it was due for demolition. A local man named Frank Yeates could not bear to see it go, so he bought the castle and spent years restoring it by hand with his family. In the 1970s, what is now the Quiet Room became a recording studio. Led Zeppelin, Queen, Deep Purple and Whitesnake all recorded albums there. Guests who stay in the Mermaid Suite can say they have slept in the same room as Freddie Mercury.
Grounds Built for Every Season
The castle sits within around twenty acres of manicured grounds, giving you plenty of room for portraits whatever the weather does. The courtyard fountain is a lovely spot for photographs between the ceremony and reception. On the right day you might even catch a rainbow over the battlements.
The Ballroom: Clearwell’s Grand Ceremony Room
Most ceremonies at Clearwell take place in the Ballroom, and it is easy to see why. It has a 75-foot aisle, leaded lancet windows and beautiful hardwood floors. Many couples use it for their wedding breakfast too. A raised dais at the front works well for signing the register. If you would rather marry outdoors, the Bandstand in the grounds is a popular alternative. Either way, the space photographs beautifully in every kind of light, whether it is dressed and empty before guests arrive or full of family during the ceremony itself.
A Grand Staircase and Elegant Interiors
Inside, Clearwell has plenty of character beyond the Ballroom. Lanterns line the entrance hallway, a sweeping staircase gives you a proper grand entrance and even the dressing rooms are full of character, with tall windows and beautiful drapes.
A Reception Styled to Impress
Clearwell also gives you a beautiful blank canvas for your reception. Fireplaces dressed with flowers, elegant table settings and a well-stocked bar all add up to a properly polished finish, whatever colour scheme or style you choose. The dining room seats guests in real style, with high ceilings and tall arched windows that let in plenty of natural light earlier in the day and glow beautifully once the candles are lit. Cutting the cake beneath one of those arched windows makes for a proper fairytale moment too.
