Villa Monastero Wedding Venue: A Lake Como Guide
Villa Monastero wedding venue sits on the shore of Lake Como, in the village of Varenna. It began life as a Cistercian nunnery in the 12th century, later becoming a private residence before opening as a botanical garden and museum. Few venues in Italy combine this much history with such uninterrupted lake views. Here is why I think Villa Monastero deserves a place on your shortlist.
Villa Monastero Wedding Venue: A Nunnery Turned Botanical Garden
The villa was built at the end of the 12th century as a Cistercian nunnery. After the monastery closed in 1567, the Mornico family bought the property and turned it into a private residence known as Villa Leliana. They kept the villa for over three centuries. Today it belongs to the Province of Lecco, and its house-museum and gardens are open to the public alongside the weddings and elopements it hosts.

Two Kilometres of Botanical Gardens
The gardens at Villa Monastero stretch for almost two kilometres along the lakefront, from Varenna towards Fiumelatte. Century-old lemon trees line the citrus garden, and stone pergolas frame the water at every turn. So couples have an enormous variety of backdrops without ever leaving the grounds. Twisted columns and classical balustrades add even more character to the portraits taken here.

Ceremony Settings Beside the Lake
Villa Monastero allows symbolic ceremonies, elopements and wedding receptions across its grounds. The lakeside terrace, with its classical balustrade, is a favourite spot for vows. Stone archways elsewhere in the garden give couples a more sheltered, intimate alternative. Either way, Lake Como is never far from view.

Golden Hour Over Lake Como
As the afternoon light softens, the lake and mountains beyond turn a deep gold. This is when Villa Monastero really comes into its own for photographs. Couples often return to the lakeside terrace for one last set of portraits before the day ends. It is, without question, one of the most romantic settings I have ever worked in.

Why I Think Villa Monastero Is the Perfect Wedding Venue
Villa Monastero wedding venue brings together centuries of history, botanical gardens and one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy. It suits couples planning an intimate elopement just as well as a larger celebration.
