Solberge Hall Wedding Venue: Why It’s the Perfect Place to Say I Do
Solberge Hall is one of my favourite North Yorkshire wedding venues to photograph. It’s easy to see why so many couples fall for it. The house is also Grade II listed and dripping in chandeliers. Set within nine private acres near Northallerton, it feels grand yet completely relaxed. If you want a wedding venue that photographs beautifully in every season, here’s why Solberge Hall deserves a spot on your shortlist.
A Georgian Country House With Real History
Yorkshire landowner John Hutton built Solberge Hall in 1824. He’d bought the estate a few years earlier from the cricketer George Osbaldeston. The Hutton family kept the house for close to a century. Then, in 1913, they sold it to the inventor Benjamin Talbot. Its current owners, The Wharfedale Group, have since given the house a multi million pound refurbishment. They’ve blended the original Georgian architecture with rich, romantic, maximalist interiors. In fact, walk through the front doors and you’ll find chandeliers in almost every room. Moody colour palettes and small details make it feel more like a European boutique hotel than a traditional country house. It’s history with a serious glow up.
The Vinery: The Heart of Every Solberge Hall Wedding
The Vinery is where the magic happens. This chandelier filled space has the biggest disco ball you’ll ever get married under. It works as both your ceremony room and your main reception space, so your guests never have far to go. You get a mirrored bar staffed by professional mixologists, plus a stage and sound system for your band or DJ. There’s also a dry ice dance floor for your first dance and a built in projector and screen. As a photographer, it’s a dream to work in. Afternoon light through the arched windows is beautiful. Once the sun goes down, the chandeliers and fairy lights create genuinely magical reception photos.
Grounds Made for Golden Hour
Outside, Solberge Hall sits on nine private acres of North Yorkshire countryside. Ancient trees, a wrap around patio, an oak arbour and a kitchen garden all give you options whatever the season. There’s even a giant chess set scattered across the lawns. I’ve photographed couples here in the depths of winter and in a garden full of daffodils in spring. It looks stunning either way. Also, the long driveway, columned entrance and manicured lawns mean the building photographs beautifully from every angle. That makes for a properly grand set of arrival and group shots.
Ceremony Options for Every Couple
Solberge Hall is licensed for civil ceremonies. You can say your vows in the Vinery surrounded by chandeliers, or head outdoors to the wedding arbour under the trees. Want something more traditional? There are two historic churches right on the doorstep. St Michael and All Angels in North Otterington sits at the end of the private driveway. St Andrew’s Church in South Otterington is a short drive away in the neighbouring village. Either way, you’re never far from the reception.
A Wedding Morning Worth Waking Up For
The venue’s wedding suite has a freestanding bath, a huge shower, chandeliers and a super king bed with countryside views. Also, next door there’s a preparation room for hair and make up. Big mirrors, plenty of plug sockets and space for the whole wedding party make getting ready just as photogenic as the reception. So that’s not something I can say about every venue.
Why I Think Solberge Hall Is the Perfect Wedding Venue
Between the history, the interiors and the grounds, Solberge Hall has become one of my favourite North Yorkshire venues to photograph. It’s got the scale for a full day and night in one location, plus exclusive use of the house. And there are enough beautiful backdrops that no two weddings there ever look the same.
